Because they are so young and just understanding the world that they live in, it is very hard to have control over themselves. This is the exact reason why they will almost always act out when they want something, but have no idea how to ask for it.

Why do toddlers hit? At this age toddlers are very passionate about what they have, or what they want and they will do whatever they can to get it. In most cases toddlers will hit to see what reaction they’ll get, and they usually don’t even realize the emotional aspect of hitting so they have no idea that they are even causing pain. Toddler hitting happens so often because toddlers get frustrated very easily and the only way they know to respond is physically.

The best way to deal with toddler hitting is to simply show your child that there are better ways to handle things. You want to always make sure to let them know that hitting is not okay, and that it hurts others. It is important to immediately try to figure out what it is that your child needs. There is a reason for their hitting so try not to get upset,as it will only confuse them since they aren’t intentionally try to be bad. As your toddler gets older they will begin understand the effects that hitting has, and will have learned healthier ways to vent.
